Ustream and qik have been longtime leaders in the mobile broadcasting industry, however a new iPhone app is looking to take up quite a bit of marketshare. TwitCasting Live just launched a video broadcasting app that integrates mobile broadcasting with Twitter.

The app utilizes the iPhone’s camera on the top portion of the screen with your Twitter timeline in the bottom portion of the screen, allowing for you two have a full conversation with your followers during the broadcast. This sounds like a great solution for podcasters with a sizable Twitter following to engage fans on a more real-time level.

MobileCrunch had this to say about the app: “Tokyo-based Twitcasting provider sidefeed claims video latency is as low as 0.3-2.0 seconds in most countries, adding 750 concurrent viewers are the maximum the app can handle at the moment (although this number will be boosted to “a couple of thousands of viewers” next week). Launched in Japan first, the English version made its formal debut during a demo event from TechCrunch Japan last week. Sidefeed says they have accommodated over 50,000 live broadcasts (80% over 3G) in the first four weeks and that they’re currently thinking about an Android port.”

Apple will never cease to amaze me with their completely arbitrary app store approval policies. In case you live under a rock, last week we covered the story that the app store removed over 6,000 apps for having, what they deemed, inappropriate content.

However, if you go through the app store you will notice that the extremely provocative Playboy, Maxim and SI Swimsuit Apps are not only still there, but are featured best sellers! It appears that all sexiness has been banned from the app store, except for the apps that happen to be made by large media companies, regardless of the content.

It’s completely ridiculous for Apple to make themselves out to be the paragon for family values, when their value system seems to be decided by who has the largest wallets.

The increasingly popular and controversial streaming music service Grooveshark has released a Spotify-esque on demand song app for the iPhone. There is only one catch… it only works for jailbroken iPhones. Most likely due to the fact that Grooveshark’s free streaming service could cut dramatically into Apple’s iTunes sales, this was an event most people saw coming.

Grooveshark has been controversial due to the fact that they’ve only signed up one of the major recording labels to a contract (EMI), but still chooses to stream music from pretty much every other label out there without permission.

Despite the competition factor, it is assumed that if Grooveshark was solid legally the app would have been approved - proof of this comes from the fact that the European streaming music service Spotify was approved to be on the app store in several nations across the pond.

This is what Techcrunch had to say about the event, “Grooveshark now says it has given up on its ambitions to get approved for the official App Store, claiming that Apple has been “ritually rejecting” the app for “primary selfish reasons”. We’ve heard that song before. The startup says it spent many months developing the iPhone application, and on occasion went months without a hearing a peep out of Cupertino. Denied access to the App Store, Grooveshark decided to head underground and is today releasing the app on Cydia, enabling people who have jailbroken their iPhone and iPod touch devices to enjoy it – and it is actually pretty cool.”

You read that right, thanks to a new service that has launched on select Blackberry handsets, you can completely remove the temptation to perform dangerous (if not illegal) acts while driving. Below is a video of the service:

Kevin Tofel, from JkOnTheRun had this to say about the service, “ZoomSafer leverages the GPS receiver in your smartphone to determine when you’re moving about in a vehicle. If you’re zipping around the town, the software locks down your device keyboard and display, eliminating distractions. The solution can be set for auto-activation, but there’s also a “passenger mode” setting, allowing for phone use while sitting shotgun. I like the auto-respond feature as well — if set, ZoomSafer will reply to incoming text messages or emails, so folks know that you’re on the road and therefore unavailable. The software also works with a Bluetooth headset to announce callers, removing the need to look at your phone.”

Dell’s new Mini 10 looks to be one of the top performing netbooks in the ever-growing portable device market, and with a native WiMax integration, this netbook could become a ‘must buy’.

Electronista broke the story and gave the specs below: Dell on Friday gave the current-generation Mini 10 a new option for WiMAX. The system’s usual 802.11g Wi-Fi card can be replaced with a combo 802.11n and WiMAX part that will give it up to 10Mbps on most any compatible network. In the US, the upgrade will tap into either Clear or Sprint 4G.

With the test numbers from Sprint’s 4G network, this device may be beating even the computers you are working with at the office or home. I know I’m looking forward to trying it out soon!

No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)

No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men)

No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)

No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)

No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned

Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble “overtly sexual!)

No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but …)

MyMobi is still here, but the .mobi domains haven’t been heard from in a while. And MobHappy has written that .mobi has been sold to the same company that sells both .org and .info domains. This move has both sides of the blogging world arguing over if this is good for the .mobi domains or if it is the end of the era. I’m agreeing more with TechDirt blogger, Mike Masnick, his views on the topic are below:

“From back when it was first suggested six or so years ago, we were quite skeptical of the need for a “mobile only” top level domain called .mobi. It wasn’t difficult to predict that devices would get better and wireless data services would get better, such that there would be no need for a special separate mobile web — as everything could easily be delivered via the “regular” web. If anything, like many new TLDs, the whole thing just seemed like a cash grab, because companies would feel obligated to pay up to reserve their .mobi domain names before someone else did. And while .mobi tried to position its offering as something much more than a splinter scaled-down internet, most people pretty quickly realized that it served no reasonable purpose. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard much at all about .mobi in a couple years, and as more and more people moved onto phones that could handle full webpages — or, companies set up their own regular websites to automatically scale down for mobile browsers — the whole concept seemed to have faded away.”

With mobile search growing at a rapid rate, it will be interesting to see if Google can keep their stranglehold on the entire search market share across all screens. One of the main reasons why they own the market right now is because they are the default search engine for the iPhone, however what would happen if Apple decided to change search partners?

Engadget reports, “According to a pair of persons familiar with the matter, Apple and Microsoft are discussing dropping Google as the default search engine on Apple’s somewhat popular handset — talks that have been underway for “weeks,” apparently. BW paints the move as further evidence of an escalating rivalry between Apple and Google. In fact, one BW source claims that, “Microsoft is now a pawn in that battle.” No doubt, the once cozy relationship has seemingly fractured with Google CEO Eric Schmidt vacating Apple’s board and Apple recently snapping up Lala and Quattro Wireless — acquisitions that some analysts see as defensive measures against a rapidly encroaching Google. Isn’t competition fun?”

All I hope is that Apple allows us to change search engines since I don’t plan on switching to Bing anytime soon.

Sprint has been considered a tier 2 network for the past few years, the combination of poor customer service and lack of smartphone variety has caused a dramatic loss in their subscriber base. However they are looking to change that with a new loyalty program that would allow subscribers to change out their outdated year old handsets for the hot new models. In other words, if you are a loyal subscriber of Sprint you can get a new phone each year without having to pay the traditional new phone penalty that other carriers charge.

James Kendrick, from JkOnTheRun.com had this to say about the announcement, “The Sprint Premier program embers are eligible for, among other things, a phone upgrade every year instead of the standard two years. Sprint will even waive the $18 activation fee. This is a pretty decent benefit, especially for those of us who change phones as often as socks. Let’s hope that Sprint can get some good loyalty going with this new program. I’m quite happy with the network performance, especially the 3G network. Though I can’t comment as to how good Sprint customer support is these days, as so far I haven’t had a reason to complain about anything.”

Now if only Sprint would get some phones that I would want to buy every year it might be worth it!

The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft will announce details regarding the new WinMo 7 mobile operating system later today. So with Windows Mobile 7 close to launch, what will happen with your current Window’s enabled phone?

Marc Flores, from MobileCrunch reports the following, “Microsoft’s bridge between WinMo 6.5 and WinMo 7 is 6.5.3, but if 7 will be announced and ready to go soon, I doubt anyone will be sore about missing an inconsequential update to the latest version of the OS. After all, according to WSJ, Windows Mobile 7 is a slick operating system that “sports a revamped user interface that resembles the look of Microsoft’s Zune HD music player.” If you’re the impatient type who needs time frames, Windows 7 devices are slated to be released later this year.”

So watch out for the Mobile World Congress and Microsoft’s announcement, rumors are that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will make the presentation.
