Is the Droid Really an iPhone Killer?

To answer the question of whether or not Verizon’s new smartphone, the Droid, is truly an iPhone killer, you have to answer the question of: what do I NEED in a mobile device? The iPhone may have the sleek exterior that has defeated worthy adversaries such as the Palm Pre, MyTouch 3G and Nokia N97, however there are still a number of voids that the Droid looks to fill.

In my day-to-day smartphone usage, I can honestly say that the fact that the Droid allows for background apps, would improve the quality of my life. However, besides that one feature, the iPhone still wins out in most categorical comparisons. See below for Crunchgear’s ranking of the two phones:

Who is the best?
Appearance: Tie
On-Screen Keyboards: iPhone
Physical Keyboards: Droid (by default)
Browser: iPhone
Navigation: Droid
Lock Screen: Droid
Battery Life: Tie
Apps: iPhone (for now)
Customization: Droid
Camera: Tie
Screen: Screen resolution
User Interface: iPhone

The consensus from the web is that the iPhone has still come out on top, however since the Droid is simply the first in a series from Verizon, Apple may have finally found a competitor in the mobile space.
