What the heck is a ‘real tone’ anyway?

A lot of people are confused about the difference between ringtones and realtones. Until recently, I was too! In a nutshell the polyphonic ringtones are in the .midi file format and realtones are .mp3. So, while the polyphonic and monophonic ringtones create computerized sounding music, realtones are in the song format that most of us put on our portable music players, .mp3. Basically, it is just a snippet of a song. So now, that we all have our ’song’ snippets on our phones, we just generalize and call everything “ringtones” or even as we use it on mymobi, just “tones” for short…. But remember, if you are buying a poly ringtone, you are buying a special .midi version of the song that is compatible with most cell phones. Check your phone, but you probably won’t want to settle for .midi version if you can have the better quality realtone .mp3 snippet. Either way - enjoy!
